Marine Technician Specialist

Get hands-on training using the latest in today's automotive technology. UTI's industry connections ensures that you will receive the most current marine mechanic's instruction on the best equipment possible. UTI remains one of the few private technical schools in the nation to be ASE Master Certified in the Automotive, Marine and Medium Heavy truck areas. As a UTI student you'll learn how to:

  • Diagnose, service and repair both domestic and foreign marine watercraft.
  • troubleshoot problems using the latest electronic engine analyzers, digital hand-held scanners, and other computerized electric diagnostic equipment.
  • Work all components, from marine engines, computerized fuel injection , marine electrical systems, and more.
  • Maintain Marine Hot Rod Power and Performance.

After completing the core marine mechanics program, you can customize your curriculum in either our MercTech or Personal Watercraft programs.

The Core

Program 600 - Marine Technician School Program
(36 Weeks - 900 Clock Hours, 30 Credit Hours)

Learn the design and function of outboard motors as well as two and four stroke engine operation. In addition, learn the different boat hull designs and how they affect rigging and performance. Design and function of various power trim and tilt systems will be taught as well. In our marine mechanic school you will receive 80% hands-on training in Rigging/Shop Practices and Procedures, Lower Units, Machine Shop, Marine Electrical Parts , Carburetion, and Marine Fuel Systems, Diagnostics and troubleshooting and Industrial Preparation.

The Electives

Program 615 - MercTech Program
(150 hours, 6 weeks, 5.0 Credit Hours)

The MercTech Program offered by Marine Mechanics Institute School is a 6-week certificate program designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to become an entry-level marine mechanic technician in the Mercury Marine dealer network. The program is equipped by Mercury Marine with current outboard and Mercruiser products.

MercTech is officially endorsed by Mercury Marine. A certificate is awarded by Marine Mechanics Institute upon successful completion of the required course of study. The Marine Technician Program is a prerequisite to enrolling in the MercTech Program.

Marine Clinic I

(75 hours) Marine mechanic school Clinic 1 covers: Mercury Marine History & Philosophy, Mercury Marine Service Administration and Software, Warranty Procedures, P.D.I., Seasonal Maintenance, Marine Exhaust Systems, Cooling Systems,Marine Electrical Wiring and Charging Systems, Marine Ignition Systems. At our marine mechanic school you will become familiar with Mercury's method of service administration and the emphasis placed on customer service and satisfaction. You will learn proper warranty, pre-delivery inspection, and seasonal marine maintenance procedures, proper marine maintenance for ocean loading and docking . Through instructor demonstration, lecture, videos, and hands-on workstations, you will learn procedures to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair cooling, exhaust, charging and marine ignition systems specific to Mercury Marine products. You will also become familiar with software programs designed for the Mercury Marine dealer network.

Marine Clinic II

(75 hours)

Marine mechanic school Clinic 2 covers: Starting Systems, Fuel Systems, transom Assemblies/Power trim & Tilt, Drive Systems & Gearcases. You will learn procedures to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical problems related to starting systems. You will become familiar with the operations of fuel systems to include E.F.I., D.F.I., and carbureted, and learn to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair those systems. This section will cover the latest drive systems, transom assemblies and their components, as well as service procedures, troubleshooting and repair.

Program 620 - Watercraft Technician Program

(9 Weeks - 225 Clock Hours, 7.5 Credit Hours)

This marine mechanic program provides you with the skills needed to apply for an entry-level position in this expanding field. Learn procedures to completely rebuild the most popular watercraft engines to manufacturers specifications. After the rebuild, use a state-of-the-art test tank to dyno test the engine performance.
